About the quote

Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), the great Norwegian explorer, led the first successful expedition through the Northwest Passage in 1906. He went on to lead a party of five on the first expedition to reach the South Pole, which they achieved in 1911. He then attempted the North Pole, and after failing by ship in 1918, took the airship Norge in 1926 with 15 other men, who became the first to reach the North Pole. In 1928, Amundsen disappeared while flying a rescue mission in the Arctic—he has never since been found.
This quote from Amundsen’s Sydpolen (‘The South Pole’) (1912) speaks from his own experience of one of the secrets to luck—if you are prepared for whatever comes your way, whether peril or opportunity, you can navigate it best. That is good luck. That brings victory. But Amundsen continues with the corollary: “Defeat is certain for him who has neglected to take the necessary precautions in time; this is called bad luck.”
This practical wisdom tells us that doing the work now, preparing for what may lie ahead, increases the chances of success. This preparation can be external—tools in order, plans and contingencies, strategies and networks. It can also be internal—priming your health, strength, skill, knowledge, discipline, focus, and other evolutionary qualities. In such preparation, the window to luck opens.
