About the quote

The Roman statesman, lawyer, philosopher, and scholar Cicero (106–43 BC) lived during a time of political turbulence prior to the formation of the Roman Empire. An excellent and renown speaker and writer, he contributed greatly to Latin language and philosophy, drawing wisdom from the earlier Greek traditions.

Although living in uncertain times, Cicero still recognised two priorities for the body and the mind—a self-sufficient garden for relaxation and fresh, healthy food and a library of enriching, illuminating books.

Cicero wrote in a letter to his friend Marcus Terentius Varro in 46 BC, in Latin, ‘Si hortum in bibliotheca habes, nihil deerit‘, which translates as ‘If you have a garden in your library, nothing will be lacking’—such an arrangement was not uncommon in the terraced homes of the wealthy Romans.

Over time, the quote has come to be paraphrased as ‘If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.’ We have gone with this modern adaptation, because it better reflects most contemporary homes. However, if you do have a garden in your library, we would love to hear about it! This may be the perfect adornment for it.
