About the quote

Lao Zi (c. 6th century BC) is an ancient Chinese mystic, philosopher and semi-legendary figure, known as the founder of Daoism. His name means ‘Old Master’, and while much of his life is shrouded in mystery, his influence over the centuries has been vast.
This quote comes from Lao Zi’s only known written work, the Dao De Jing. The quote highlights that when describing a way, or a spiritual path, or a practice in life, one’s words can only ever describe part of it, constrained by time, and cannot speak of the eternal way. Similarly, in naming something, one can only ever name its temporal form, not its true, eternal name. These profound yet simple words highlight a depth beyond words.
