About the quote

Voltaire is the pen name of François-Marie Arouet (1694-1778), a French Enlightenment philosopher, writer and historian. He contributed greatly to these disciplines through his prolific writings, in essays, satire and works on history. He is well known for his emphasis on reason, scepticism, tolerance, and a pragmatic lifestyle.

This quote, from his Dictionnaire philosophique entry on ‘common sense’ expresses the irony that common sense is actually harder to find among people than its name may suggest. As one looks into the world and its history, examining the various doings of our species, irrationality and impracticality appear, when often a more straightforward, down-to-earth solution might have been better. It makes the world interesting to watch, but Voltaire preferred common sense.
